Would you buy a used car from this guy?

Yes I know he doesn’t sell used cars, he runs GoDaddy the web hosting company and where I have at least one domain registered. But what’s with the s@#t-eating, I’ve got more money than you smirk. It just creeps me out when I get the regular email.
Sorry Bob, don’t sue me.

Pet Hates
Do you have a number of pet hates? Mine mainly relate to incorrect use of language by people who should know better, those in the media industries. A few examples are as follows:
There were less people at the restaurant.
With the worldwide overweight problem, it would be better if there were in fact ‘less’ of each person but it would be more correct to say fewer.
My team scored a higher amount of points than your team.
Surely all points are the same size no matter what number of points you have scored.
Older men often have trouble with their prostrate gland.
While the gland is important in activities carried out in a ‘prostrate’ position, most experts know it as the prostate gland.
I am sure there are plenty of more examples. Can’t think of any more at present.

Equality Part 2
A gay hotel (I don’t know how a hotel can be gay but that is how it has been reported) in Melbourne, Victoria has won an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act under a ruling by the Victoria State Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Therefore, management has won the right to refuse entry to heterosexuals.
I am not making any value judgments here but this sort of hypocrisy infuriates me. It is either wrong to discriminate on the basis of sexual preference or it isn’t - you can’t have it both ways (pun intended).
I am of course simplifying what is a complex issue but sometimes this is the best practice. One of the arguments for the decision is that there are many places where heterosexuals can go but very few places where homosexuals can go and not be harassed or vilified. Very few places they can go? This is bulls#%@t - they can go anywhere they damn please - that is the point of anti-discrimination laws. The issue of whether they feel safe is an entirely different matter and I would support any and all steps taken to ensure this is the case. Personal safety is an issue that must be managed for all regardless of any labels we chose to apply to particular groups.
Rant over.

Fanboys make me laugh
From Wikipedia:
Fanboy or Fanboi is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. Fanboys are also stereotypically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.
I really become quite amused when I come across examples of fanboys in the wild. The obsession can be anything, Linux, Apple Macs, Windows are the ones I see on line most of all but the list can be extended to off line areas as well. Makes of car I suppose could be an example. Here is the latest example which amused me, found in comments to an article on the top 10 Linux distributions:
Microsoft’s borrowed operating system is extended after embracing any succesful (sic) project, be it active X or mysql and released by a criminal monoply (sic) . It comes with a minimal set of applications (a calculator, a few games, some networking tools, an Internet browser.. etc). Software can be obtained by users from various sources and installed on the operating system ,Usually without any interaction or knowledge of the unsuspecting user.
What is most amusing in this example is that the original article had nothing to do with Windows whatsoever. There hadn’t even been any Windows related comments to the article before this one. I could understand perhaps such a comment if the story was comparing Linux to Windows and there are plenty of those if you look for them (On second thoughts, no I couldn’t - criminal monopoly!? Please!). No, this was Linux compared to itself in its many flavours. It is also worth noting that while the article is not trying to say one distribution is better than another but rather that which one is best depends on what you need, there was still plenty of debate (to use the term loosely) about which is the best.

Afterthought - I use both Windows and Linux depending on what I am doing and would relish the chance to try Mac but funds do not permit.

Keith Richards seen outside crematorium
Keith Richards has to be one of the world’s most famous drug addicts, not to mention having a face like a Sharpei puppy. Apparently though the normal illicit substances are not enough for our boy Keith, he’s also snorted his Dad. Yep, he has been quoted as saying that he ground up the ashes of his poor dead Dad and snorted him up the old hooter. Life must be pretty boring over in mega rich, I’m a rockstar land. I can just see it now, sitting around with the boys, having a few drinks, doing a few drugs - then hey, what can we stick up our noses? Why the last earthly remains of ones dearly departed father of course.

The Prime Minister and the Porn King
How’s that for a headline. It seems the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, had lunch in 2004 with a pornographer who has since been jailed for crimes including torture. The porn king in question somehow scored an invitation to a fund raising lunch and somehow security checks failed to pick this up. Makes you proud to be an Aussie.

The world has gone mad
The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix started in Melbourne today. One Ferrari supporter was refused admission to the track because he was in the possession of a Ferrari flag. Oh please - perhaps he was going to strangle a BMW fan with it. This after the “Mexican Wave” was banned at cricket grounds this summer. (cricket is a bit like a baseball game that lasts 5 days ... but different)
Our world has gone mad.

Pies to be banned at the football?
A nutritionist in Australia has called for the meat pie to be banned at football matches. Apparently UK soccer clubs Arsenal and Glasgow Celtic have already replaced pies with healthier alternatives. For American readers banning the pie at footy games would be like banning hot dogs at baseball games (a pie in Australia is a hot meat and gravy filled pastry).
What a ridiculous notion. People cannot be protected from themselves no matter how hard we try. Banning something is seldom the answer to a problem.
Anyway, I’m off to have a pie and chips (french fries) for dinner.
