PVRs and piracy

Driving home from work this afternoon I saw a sign on the back of a bus advertising the new DVD hard drive recorder from LG. (now I am sure you are saying to yourself - wow I am glad I tuned into this post - but bear with me).

The tag line for the ad was “make this the last tv ad that you see”.

I would be interested to know what the reaction of those companies that advertise on tv would be to such an ad - on second thoughts, I know - they would be pissed off!

More to the point, I ponder the contrast between this situation and the copying of copyrighted material such as music cds and DVDs. It seems that the general consensus in our society that it is fine to record material from tv and then use that recording to not watch the ads. As PVRs become more widespread (in Australia at least) this situation could escalate and fewer and fewer people will bother to watch ads. This will of course be offset by people’s desire to watch now rather than record and watch later but I know from my own experience that I am in fact recording more content to watch at a time that suites me.

Of course when I do record a program I dutifully watch all the ads in their entirety wink

Honda Formula 1 car sponsored by the environment

Now that tobacco sponsorship has been banned in Formula 1 racing, Honda have painted their car in an environmental theme and they are “racing to raise awareness of environmental issues”

That’s funny, I thought they raced to sell more cars - more cars sold, more pollution. Not to mention that motorsport would have to be one of the most environmentally unfriendly sports out there.

I am actually a big fan of Formula and all forms of motorsport but this does all seem a little hypocritical.

He who hesitates is lost

Someone said that once - I don’t know who - don’t even care much - but it is true.

Generally I am finding that blog topics occur to me at all sorts of funny times. I therefore will usually write them down somewhere and later think about them some more and make a post out of them if they are worthy (or if I have nothing else to say). Recently, I have had two topics that I have been mulling over:

1. the idea of having a niche for a blog as recommended by many of the “experts” in the blogosphere; and

2. increasing responsibility and the effect it has had on my lifestyle.

You may be thinking by now “what is this wanker talking about and when will he get to the point?”, well I am getting there.

As it turns out, 2 of the blogs that I have been reading regularly lately have posted on these very topics.

RT at untwistedvortex talks about his views on the idea of a blog needing a niche and blogpaul discusses the fact that he doesn’t have a dirt bike anymore.

So there you go - I’ll need to think some more and make sure I’m not seen as stealing content from these guys. RT and Blogpaul have some good things to say so you should go and check them out. But make sure you come back and see if I have said anything worthwhile.

The value of the internet

Give an infinite number of monkeys typewriters and they’ll produce the works of Shakespeare. Unfortunately, I feel like I’m reading all the books where they didn’t.

An open letter to the Acme Corporation

Dear Acme Corporation

It has been two months now since I ordered the “Amazing Acme Time Machine” from your summer catalogue and I still have not received the product. My need for this item is becoming more urgent by the day and I urge you to take immediate action. Allow me to provide some further details in support of my claim.

You see I am the father of two daughters. I feel blessed every day that I have been sent these angels but there is one significant problem and this is where your product is relevant.

They are growing up too damn fast. My 11 year old now insists on buying her own clothes (with my money of course) and insists that she must wear the latest fashions. The trouble is the “latest fashions” are those being modeled on MTV by the likes of Brit, Christina and Gwen (I like watching MTV too).

My 6 year old has just started school and frankly I am just not ready to have two children at school, especially when one of them appears to be trying to attract her potential husband already.

As you can appreciate, I therefore urgently need the “Amazing Acme Time Machine” so that I may make frequent use of its “stop time for 60 minutes” feature and therefore save what is left of my quickly disappearing sanity.

Please deal with this matter with the utmost promptitude otherwise I will be forced to send the roadrunner over and he will shove a rocket up your ..... (sorry, I told you I was losing my sanity)

Yours sincerely

Coach

The Prime Minister and the Porn King

How’s that for a headline. It seems the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, had lunch in 2004 with a pornographer who has since been jailed for crimes including torture. The porn king in question somehow scored an invitation to a fund raising lunch and somehow security checks failed to pick this up. Makes you proud to be an Aussie.

The world has gone mad

The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix started in Melbourne today. One Ferrari supporter was refused admission to the track because he was in the possession of a Ferrari flag. Oh please - perhaps he was going to strangle a BMW fan with it. This after the “Mexican Wave” was banned at cricket grounds this summer. (cricket is a bit like a baseball game that lasts 5 days ... but different)

Our world has gone mad.

Agloco - an alternative view

I wrote yesterday about Agloco after reading some positive things about it at various places around the Net. Further reading today shows an alternative view. I am still considering where I stand on this and while I have signed up it remains to be seen whether I will in fact use it. How’s that for a potential backflip - it would make many a politician proud.

Nigerian money scams

I have received plenty of these scams over the years and always find them quite amusing.

Webgrrrl has an interesting post on how she has followed up on such a scam. Also of interest is 419eater which explores the idea of turning the tables on the scammers. Entertaining reading.

Check out Agloco

I ordinarily wouldn’t give something like a second look. Get paid to surf the Net? I would have put it in the “too good to be true” category.

However, with a number of referrals on blogs that I read, including the well-respected John Chow dot com it looks like it is the real deal. I have signed up and await the release of the “Viewbar” toolbar which is the heart of the money making. Check it out at Agloco.com or better still click on the link in the sidebar at the right of the page so that I get the referral.

Root Of All Evil Nintendo Wii contest

While I really enjoy John Chow’s blog and love the idea of winning a Nintendo Wii, this is one post it would be better if no-one read. The more people who do read about it you see, the lower my chances of winning the Wii. And no, I don’t have an over inflated opinion of myself - I do realise that there are not thousands of people reading this blog after only a couple of weeks.

The root of all evil, John Chow is giving away a Nintendo Wii. The contest is sponsored by 1234Pens.com. They make promotional pens.

I can’t wait to get my hands on that Wii surprised - it’s mine I tell you, all mine.

Hardline Islamic Clerics in Australia

This post is not intended to be a racial slur on Muslims or the Islamic religion. I also do not intend for these comments to be interpreted as being directed at the Muslim community in general. If you don’t believe me I don’t care!

As reported in “The Australian” newspaper and elsewhere, a minority of “hardline” clerics are urging their followers to cheat the tax system as paying taxes is contrary to Islamic law.  They are also alledgedly indicating that cheating the welfare system is also the way to go. This comes not long after Sheik Taj el Din al Hilali compared Australian women to plates of meat.

Australia was built on immigration and generally people who come to live in our great land appreciate the diversity that exists here. They are also quite willing to work hard and pay their share of taxes. This included I am sure most of the people of the Islamic faith who call Australia home.

It seems however that when such outrageous claims are made by an influential minority we are expected to turn the other cheek and say that everyone is entitled to their opinion. While this is true, I wonder what the reaction would be if I went to a Muslim country and suggested that it was not appropriate to pay zakat towards charitable causes as is required under sharia law. I would suggest that I would not be welcome in that particular country for very long.

Enough is enough. Racism is racism whether perpetrated by “whites”, “blacks” or any colour in between. It seems odd that Imams that make these outrageous claims are not branded as such.

Rant over.

Follow up to iPod vibrator

Recently I blogged about the new iPod vibrator from OhMiBod.
John Chow wrote a review of the same product back in February which attracted quite a bit of interest based on the comments for his article.

John has just posted a review of a similar product, the iBuzz (seems every new product has to have an “i” in the name these days. This new review got me thinking about what playlists people might put together for those “special moments” spent with their music and one of these pleasure machines. Here is what I came up with after a few minutes thought (add to the list through comments if you feel like it):

  • The William Tell Overture - as included in my original post and just for the cannons
  • Shook me all night long - AC/DC
  • Shakin all over - Johnny Kidd?
  • Nothing as it seems - Pearl Jam
  • Shake your groove thing - Peaches & Herb
  • (I come from the land) Down Under - Men at Work
  • Feelin’ way too damn good - Nickelback
  • Here without you - 3 Doors Down
  • God (iPod) put a smile upon your face - Coldplay
  • Hells Bells - AC/DC
  • On my own - Black Eyed Peas
  • Shake your booty - KC and the Sunshine Band
  • Anything by Metallica
