Comodo Free Security Software Update 2

I am still running the free Comodo Firewall on two machines without any problems. It does seem a little slow to “learn”. I seem to be getting repeat requests for some programs to access the internet.

After the negative comments I mentioned in an earlier post I decided to stop using the antivirus program. After all it is still in beta. The uninstall went without a hitch despite some comments I had read about it being a nightmare to get rid of. Perhaps these comments were for beta 1 - I had beta 2.0.

I am now using AVG free antivirus - not sure how effective it is but the price is right. Any thoughts anyone?

I hate to tell you this, Coach, but the only firewall I’ve used in 6 months is the Windows built-in firewall. I’ve also used AVG for longer than that. I use Spybot S&D;and Ad Aware to sweep the nasties once every week or so. I have yet to get anything malicious on my computer. Of course, I only download software and other items from reputable sources and stay away from the websites that can cause problems. Heck, I spend 80 percent of my time either working on my blog or visiting another, so it doesn’t make me a very good target for anything.

I hear what you’re saying RT and appreciate the feedback. I am a little over cautious (translation - paranoid). The main thing that keeps me using a third party firewall is the fact that I do all my banking online and feel better with an additional layer of comfort. I often read of accounts of people putting an unprotected computer on the net to see how long before it gets attacked. When my wife brought home her new laptop recently it got a trojan on it in the time it took to download a firewall and AV and install. Of course the Windows firewall was turned off during this time. The copy of Nortan AV that came with the machine found it straight away.

Hey Coach…

I’ve been using AVG Free for years, and if anything, it has only gotten better.  My advice as a computer tech is to avoid McAfee & NAV like the plague.  Another great, free antivirus is ClamWin AV.

I use both, AVG Free on PC’s and ClamWin on servers, because AVG Free won’t install on a Windows NOS.

PS...I don’t use any firewall ever.  I disable Windows firewall completely.  I don’t have to use spyware removal software because I don’t use IE (I use Firefox solely).

If I were to use anti-spyware programs, I would go with RT’s suggestion of Spybot & Adware (both free).

Thanks for the input Matthew
