What do you give up for your blog?
Dan at The Wrong Advices recently posted about “How much time do you spend on your blog” and I have been thinking about it ever since. After all, time is something most of appear to have in short supply (oh dear what a cliche). I include time reading other blogs as well as that is part of the overall appeal for me.
I have come around to thinking about this question from another angle - what do I give up for the blog? This for me is a more relevant question considering my lifestyle and the stage I am up to in my life. The answer to the original question is probably too much, however, I think that as long as I am not prioritizing blogging over more important activities then I can justify the time spent doing it. This justification is of course to myself but more importantly to my family.
So what am I giving up? The main thing is watching TV. I love nothing better than to sit in front of the idiot box and not contemplate the problems of the world. The trouble is that this is a very non-productive activity. At least with blogging it forces me to think a little bit occasionally (perhaps not always evident from my posts). Unfortunately, I also on occasion blog instead of doing the work that I bring home that I actually get paid for so I will have to watch this so that it doesn’t become an issue. Finally, I am trying to get a sports related blog up and running and writing this post is keeping me from doing some design work on the templates so I am going to stop waffling.
What are you not doing?

I spend at least two hours a day on my blog. I would either have been playing a game or reading during that time anyway so I’m not really losing anything. Plus I’m getting up earlier in the a.m. now to work on my blog so it have actually bought me more time.

Coach - I spend a great deal of time on my blog. Mostly looking for good stuff to post and visiting my blogging friends everyday. It takes lots of time, but unlike you I find nothing on TV that interests me. A waste of time in my view of the world…

I can spend anywhere from 2 hours to 16 hours, not only on my blog, but also reading, researching, e-mails, skype and other stuff. I like it when i have a “day off” and spend only 1-2 hours online

T.D. - the early morning start is a good idea, I just can’t drag my sorry butt out of bed early enough.
Comedy+ - I must admit I am not missing the TV
Jonathon - That sounds like a full time job. I could handle that if the opportunity came by.

It is a full-time job for me, Coach, since I’m retired.

RT - my ambition is to retire while I am still young enough to enjoy it so I envy you. At the rate my superannuation is going I will be working until I’m 80 and I should have enough money to live until I’m 82.

I’m with you coach. The time I spend on blogs would previously have been spent watching TV. I don’t watch TV these days unless it is a major sporting event.
